Section 02Her Story

Three decades in, building the practice the system was missing

The same gap, over and over, until she built around it.

After three decades in healthcare, Angela Vanderberg had seen the same gap close up, repeatedly: adults struggling with addiction, trauma, and mental health challenges who could not access care that treated them as whole people. Psychiatric care was separated from addiction medicine. Providers were overloaded. Waits were long. The experience felt clinical at best, and dehumanizing at worst.

She founded Personal Wellness Psychiatric Services to be the practice she wished existed: one where a triple board-certified provider with addictions credentialing could handle psychiatric medication, addiction medicine, and the family-medicine context together, where patients were treated with respect from the first phone call, and where the goal was always genuine recovery rather than symptom management. Whether addiction is part of your picture or not, the same careful read applies.

"Judgment-free care is not a philosophy statement. It is a clinical requirement. Shame does not heal anything." A.V., on her practice

Her CARN-AP credential is rare among prescribing psychiatric providers in Northwest Indiana. It requires 500 supervised direct addiction client hours, plus 1,500 additional advanced-practice addiction hours, plus 45 contact hours, on top of the master's-level nursing foundation. It is not a weekend course. It is the credential that says addiction medicine is core to the practice, not a sideline.

15+ years of advanced practice spans emergency, primary care, and psychiatric specialty work. That breadth shows up in the clinical judgment a credential alone cannot provide.

Section 03Philosophy

Mind. Body. Balance.

Three principles that guide every appointment, every treatment plan, every conversation. Not slogans. Operating rules.

Mind

Mental health is physical health. Psychiatric conditions get the same clinical rigor and evidence base as any other medical specialty. No hierarchy, no stigma.

Body

As FNP-BC, Angela addresses the physical dimensions of mental health and addiction. What happens in the body shapes what happens in the mind, and vice versa.

Balance

Recovery and stability are practices, not destinations. Treatment plans adapt to real life rather than idealized conditions.

Section 04The Masthead

Credentials behind the care.

Triple board certification representing three separate national examinations and substantial supervised clinical hours. The combination, especially CARN-AP plus PMHNP-C, is rare in Northwest Indiana.
