Trauma-Informed Care

What Is Trauma-Informed Care?

Trauma-informed care is an approach to mental health and addiction treatment that recognizes how past trauma can impact emotional regulation, behavior, physical health, and overall well-being. Trauma may result from experiences such as abuse, neglect, violence, medical trauma, accidents, loss, or prolonged stress.

Rather than asking “What’s wrong with you?”, trauma-informed care asks “What happened to you?” This approach prioritizes safety, respect, and collaboration while acknowledging the lasting effects trauma can have on the brain and nervous system. Trauma-informed care helps individuals feel supported, understood, and empowered throughout treatment.

How Trauma Can Affect Mental Health

Trauma can influence mental health in many ways and may contribute to ongoing emotional and behavioral challenges:

Anxiety, depression, emotional numbness, irritability, mood swings, or difficulty trusting others.

Hypervigilance, sleep disturbances, chronic stress, fatigue, or heightened startle responses.

Avoidance, substance use as a coping mechanism, difficulty with boundaries, or challenges regulating emotions.

Strained relationships, difficulty at work, feelings of overwhelm, or challenges feeling safe and grounded.
